After a seemingly endless winter, Spring has begun to show its face to Kentuckiana. With these hints of warmer weather come all those things about Spring that make it a special season of renewal. Trees and flowers begin to bloom. Lawns deepen in color. Our sense of community is awakened as we emerge from our homes and begin celebrating our special sense of neighborliness.

As our spirits and hopes brighten, we need to remember that the issue of hunger knows no seasonal boundaries. One in six of our neighbors continue to struggle to put food on their table. One in five children lack the nutrition they need to live a healthy life and lay the foundation for a successful future. Because the face of hunger is invisible, you may be surprised to know that it exists in every ZIP code of every county in Kentuckiana. Hunger exists not in isolated pockets of our community. Hunger exists in the ZIP code where you live.

Though the scale of hunger’s invasion is huge, so is our community’s heart. With your support, Dare to Care is responding. All around Kentuckiana, Dare to Care’s partnership network of food pantries, after-school programs and emergency feeding programs work tirelessly to provide struggling families with the food they need. In the past year, Dare to Care distributed enough food to our partners to supply over 13 million meals throughout our community. We also introduced a new way to exponentially increase our Kids Cafe program in the past year with the opening of the Dare to Care Community Kitchen in partnership with The Lift a Life Foundation. With this creative new way of doing business, Dare to Care tripled the number of Kids Cafe meals provided to the community with over 1,000 meals being delivered daily from the Community Kitchen to afterschool programs throughout our area.

The work continues. As summer approaches and children are out of school and no longer accessing the school lunch program, families turn even more to Dare to Care for help.

While our work is serious and critical to our community’s health, supporting Dare to Care and helping our struggling neighbors can be done in a fun way. The 27th annual Taste of Derby Festival presented by Brown-Forman Corporation will be on April 9 at Louisville Slugger Field. Louisville’s world-renowned restaurant community steps up and over 40 of Louisville’s finest provide samples of their best fare. Over 20 different beverages are also provided for tasting. Tickets are only $80 apiece. With Dare to Care’s ability to provide four meals for every dollar we receive, you not only get to enjoy a fun-filled night, your ticket price of $80 also helps supply 320 meals to our community.

The Kentucky Derby Festival is a great celebration of community spirit and unity. There is no better way to kick off these weeks of fun than by joining Dare to Care’s community-wide effort to make sure every one of our neighbors has the food they need. Join us at Taste of Derby Festival on April 9. Get your tickets at www.tasteofderbyfestival.org or call us at 502.966.3821.
