Barnstables Hit The Jackpot With Cal And Anthony

Dale and Winnie Barnstable’s daughters are do-gooders in the best sense of the term.

And here’s a friendly bit of advice: Go to their party if you can, but don’t ever try to out-do their always top-tier guest list at the sisters’ annual party to end all parties the night before the Kentucky Derby.

For instance:
Kentucky’s hottest two celebrities, UK coach John Calipari and Anthony Davis, the magical big man who led the Wildcats to their eighth national basketball championship this year, headline the list of celebrities who will gather as close to Tricia Barnstable Brown’s Cherokee Park mansion as they can get. Sister Priscilla joins Tricia in hosting the event that benefits the Barnstable Brown Diabetes and Obesity Center at their alma mater, UK, where they led cheers for the Wildcats. Their father, Dale, was a basketball star for the Wildcats, being an alternate on the Gold Medal-winning USA team in the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

The sisters know how to double their party’s A list: Invite a top quarterback and he will bring his favorite receiver. This year’s pair are New England Patriots’ QB Tom Brady and Deion Branch of UofL fame. Brady got the Pats to sign Branch so he could rejoin Brady.

Surely you noticed that another QB, Peyton Manning, got his new team, the Denver Broncos, to add one of his favorite pass-catchers, ex-UK end Jacob Tamme. They had teamed with the Indianapolis Colts.

And you know who was the top draft pick in the NFL draft.

No wonder that the quarterbacks always get the highest bonus for being selected so high in the draft. I’m told that they also tend to get the best-looking girlfriends and wives.

There are other stars from the world of sports, chiefly A-List tennis greats Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf. And Green Bay Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers.

Another championship Wildcat, Darius Miller, also will be at the party. So will many other big names from other arenas, but I’ll let someone else tell you about the non-jocks.

Have fun!

Late additions: ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews will be here as will Kate Upton. Somebody told me that Kate was the cover girl on this year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, but I wouldn’t know about that.

Are You Sad?

In a story about depression in Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, psychologists ranked states in two categories: Happiest and Saddest.

Guess which state is the saddest? We are! Yes, Kentucky!

Surely the testing was done before UK won the national basketball championship.

Here are the rankings:

  1. Hawaii
  2. N. Dakota
  3. Alaska
  4. Minnesota
  5. Nebraska

  1. Kentucky
  2. West Va.
  3. Tennessee
  4. Nevada
  5. R.I.

UofL, UK Football

Important dates for Louisville and Kentucky football fans: The kickoff for the Governor’s Cup celebration will be July 25 with a dinner at the Ali Center and golf will be the next day at UofL’s Cardinal Club in Simpsonsville.

The head coaches, UofL’s Charlie Strong and UK’s Joker Phillips, will speak at both events.

Then they will close down nearly all speaking engagements and start preparing for the opener, this year in Louisville, on Sunday, Sept. 2.
