It’s always fun catching up with a few of our local boutiques about upcoming fashion trends. We are forever grateful for their continued support of The Voice-Tribune’s BD2012, presented by Churchill Downs.
Lori Kommor: Who are some of your favorite designers that can be found in Rodeo Drive, and why?Â
Michelle Tasman: Alice + Olivia always brings a fresh new twist to their sophisticated styles. J Brand jeans and AG jeans both have great fits in new colors that are flattering for every body type. Elizabeth and James stays city-chic in a feminine way that everyone seems to love.
L.K.: What new colors and fabric trends will be hitting the racks this fall?Â
M.T.: Both silk and leather are huge for this fall. Not just leather jackets, but leather pants, skirts, leggings with leather patches, and everything else trimmed in leather! Lots of neutrals with a pop of color, such as an off-white blouse paired with cobalt leggings that are trimmed in black leather accents. Add boots and a statement handbag, and the outfit is complete.
L.K.: Women love their handbags – is there a must-have for this season?Â
M.T.: A barrel bag for daytime and any envelope clutch at night – either one is fabulous in a bold color like tangerine or cobalt.
Meggie McMahon from Clodhoppers:
Lori Kommor: What advice would you give someone who is considering opening a boutique?
Meggie McMahon: Work for a boutique for a couple of years to know the business before deciding to open your own. While most of the time working for a boutique is a lot of fun, it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to own one. Kathy and Kelly have owned Clodhoppers for almost 19 years! You definitely need a passion for the industry to be successful like they have been.
LK: How would you describe Clodhoppers to someone who has never been in your store?
MM: Clodhoppers is a local boutique with an eclectic mix of southern classics, fashion-forward pieces, great-fitting jeans and beautiful jewelry from local artisans. It’s a place where you can find help updating your wardrobe and a sincere, friendly opinion on style and fit.
LK: Who are some of your favorite designers, and why?
MM: Michelle Smith, the designer of Milly, our most popular label. Michelle has a way of creating beautiful, classic pieces with just the right amount of feminine flair to keep us excited. Her sheaths show us how well she knows how to fit the female form, and her use of color and pattern always produces exquisite fabrics for her designs.
Lauren Moffatt’s vintage-chic aesthetic always gets us excited. She has a way of staying on trend while still incorporating her well-known vintage look to every garment she designs. It’s her penchant for detail that sets her apart in the fashion industry.
