University of Kentucky basketball finally is on the road to getting a special category of athletes that Paul “Bear†Bryant had during his illustrious football coaching career with the Wildcats.
Bryant recruited the versatile Jones twins – Harry and Larry – from Louisville’s duPont Manual High School in Louisville. The running backs played for Bryant in 1950, ’51 and ’52.
Now UK basketball coach John Calipari, fresh off UK’s eighth national championship, has landed 6-foot-5 twins Andrew and Aaron Harrison of Richmond, Texas, for the Wildcats. They announced their decision on national television (ESPNU) Oct. 4.
Andrew is regarded as the No. 1 point guard in the nation. His twin Aaron is the No. 1 shooting guard in the 2013 class.
The three years the Jones twins played were the most successful in UK football history. The most special year was 1950 when the Wildcats went 11-1 and put an end to Oklahoma’s winning streak with a 13-7 win in the Sugar Bowl. The Sagarin Ratings of USA Today awarded the national championship to Bryant’s team after running the results of that year in their computer.
UK beat Texas Christian 20-7 in the Cotton Bowl after the 8-4 1951 season. Bryant’s last year at UK was 7-2-1.
Harry and the late Larry Jones were fabulously successful in the plastics business in Louisville.
“I just got a call from a friend who told me that Joe B. (Hall) just mentioned us on his and Denny’s (Crum) radio show,†said Harry.
