Bingham Fellows Class of 2013

From a very competitive pool of candidates, 46 community leaders were selected to participate in the Bingham Fellows Class of 2013, and eight additional leaders were identified to serve on the program’s steering committee. The topic for the 2013 Bingham Fellows is: Developing a Smart Food Culture, focused on improving the health of Louisville citizens using the strong food economy and nutrition as a platform. Thanks to a generous donation of scholarship funds from the Humana Foundation, the class has an enhanced ability to promote healthy lives and healthy activities by focusing on the nutritional habits of children and families. As with every Bingham Fellows program year, the class is made up of a very talented group of local leaders with a broad knowledge base and range of experience on the topic.

An opening retreat was held Jan. 24 and 25, during which the class was asked to tap into their imagination and talent, gathering critical resources to create social change. Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, Director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness, helped kick off the program. The class will travel to Kentucky State University in Frankfort to meet with a team of professors who are conducting local and national studies on how to develop a smart food culture. Throughout the program year, the class will meet with topic experts, learn from national best practices and work together to give this issue visibility and momentum for positive change.

Oxmoor Center Redevelopment

Oxmoor Center has announced a multi-million dollar redevelopment, which began construction Feb. 1. The project includes the demolition of the mezzanine, which currently houses the food court and a number of other retailers; new soft seating areas; the addition of a soft play area near Sears; and the renovation of center court. In preparation of the renovation, several retailers have relocated from the mezzanine to the first floor. Stride Rite and Subway recently closed their mezzanine stores and reopened in the Sears wing. In addition, Modelle’s Custom Tailors will move to the Dick’s Sporting Goods wing and Something 2 Do will move to the Sears wing. Other moves may be forthcoming and several new retailers and eateries, yet to be named, will be added. The project is scheduled to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2013, just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Fine Art Firm

Fine Art Firm, a local art gallery, is a continuation and an extension of Polonaise Fine Art and Studio 47 Galleries of Art, established on the East Coast in the late 1990s. Four Roses Honored

Whisky Advocate, America’s leading whisky magazine, named Four Roses’ 2012 Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon its choice for “American Whiskey of the Year.” The Whisky Advocate Awards, now in their 19th year, are the oldest and longest-running annual whisky award program. The award-winners will be highlighted in the magazine’s Spring 2013 issue this March. The awards are “a recognition of a combination of excellence, innovation, tradition, and…simply great-tasting whisky,” according to the magazine’s online blog.

Four Roses 2012 Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon was released last September. Master Distiller Jim Rutledge hand selected four recipes from the distillery’s ten to make up the limited Small Batch offering, one being a 17-year-old bourbon coming from Four Roses’ OBSV recipe, which encompasses delicate fruit, spicy and creamy characterisics. In addition, the 2012 Limited Edition Small Batch also includes a 12-year-old OBSK, a 12-year-old OESK as well as an 11-year-old OBSV, all married together to create one of Four Roses’ most alluring spirits ever. Among the flavor characteristics, the new bourbon exhibits an aroma of creamy vanilla and citrus with hints of allspice, nutmeg and rich pipe tobacco. The palate offers mellow flavors of orange peel and ripe red raspberries, dark chocolate and caramel custard, finishing with soft cedar and vanilla.

The award caps a big year for Four Roses. In addition to the Whisky Advocate honor, Four Roses Distillery was named “Whisky Distiller of the Year – America” for the third consecutive year by international whiskey industry publication, Whisky Magazine late last year. Best Places to Work in Kentucky

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management, in conjunction with the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, has announced the winners in the Ninth Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky competition. The winner rankings will be announced at an awards dinner Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Lexington Convention Center. The 2013 list of winners has the most in the history of Best Places to Work in Kentucky, with 74 companies making the prestigious list.

Winners from across the state have been selected in two categories: small/medium-sized employer (companies of 25 to 249 U.S. employees) and large-sized employer (companies of 250 U.S. employees or greater). The selection process, managed by Best Companies Group, is based on an assessment of the company’s employee policies and procedures and the results of an internal employee survey. The competition is a multi-year initiative designed to motivate companies in the Commonwealth to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence. Numerous studies show a strong correlation between profitability and creating a good place to work. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky initiative is based on Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” list.

Cultural Awareness Tours

Greater Louisville Inc. – The Metro Chamber of Commerce – will host Cultural Awareness Tours to Turkey and Brazil for both members and non-members as part of its global connections activities for 2013. This is the second year for the program, which last year sponsored trips to Cuba and India. The trips are designed to provide participants with the opportunity to experience different cultural activities, see important historic sites and explore international business climates. There are also business-to-business networking opportunities available for those who choose to participate.

The 12-day trip to Turkey is scheduled for May 23 to June 3 and includes sightseeing in Istanbul and Ankara as well as excursions to the ancient Greek ruins of Ephesus along with trips to Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Louisville’s Sister City, Adapazari. The 9-day Brazil itinerary runs from Sept. 25 to Oct. 3 and includes stays in both Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, and Rio de Janeiro. Highlights are visits to Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana Beach, a traditional Samba show and a tour of the rain forest. The deadline to register for Turkey is March 21. Brazil’s registration deadline is July 12.

Both trips include round trip international flights from Chicago O’Hare airport, arrival and departure transfers, hotel accommodations, daily breakfast, all sightseeing tours, transportation in private coaches and English-speaking guides. Each trip also offers specific amenities based on each locale, including special lunches, dinners and entertainment. GLI sponsors the trips in partnership with Indus Travels. This year, the Turkey trip offers an optional extension package to attend the global business-to-business conference, Futurallia. Brazil activities include an optional half-day of networking appointments with local businesses.
