Fashion View: Julie Shown

The Chic Sheet

What is your fashion view?

To me, fashion means dressing for special events. Style is more of a day-to-day, personality-defining term.

How do you describe your style?

My style is urban-prep. I like preppy pieces and patterns with modern cuts and tailoring. From ballet flats to boots, if it’s a classic item and in a new bright color, then that is even better.

What are your favorite pieces?

Calypso cashmere sweaters are my favorite pieces because they are fluffy and layer well. J. Crew City Fit Pants are also on my list because they look great with flats and tuck nicely into boots. And I absolutely live in my Patagonia Better Sweater and colorful cords from November to March.

I also enjoy a Frank and Eileen gingham button-down. Although its wrinkled wash makes it a bit less traditional, it is super practical because I’m not allowed to iron it. My tortoiseshell glasses are also a favorite of mine because I like to make a random statement every now and then.

Where is your favorite place to shop?

J. Crew and Calypso provide the bulk of my wardrobe. However, Cargo and Clodhoppers are my local go-to stores as well. I guess I like to stick with the “C’s”! I love to shop international labels for pants, because for some reason Europeans and Asians seem to get the fit just right for me.

Who is your fashion icon, and why?

Icon? Yikes! I don’t have a fashion icon, but I am inspired by my creative friends because I’m not into a specific look. However, if I had to say one, I’d choose Carolina Herrera. She is so colorful and classic! I also find inspiration from fashion bloggers such as Lizzie Garrett of and the bloggers behind and

What inspires you when you are shopping?

I love a bargain and I’ve never met a stripe I didn’t like. I also love to search magazines for “looks” before I go shopping, but ultimately I’m an impulse buyer.  I usually know something is right for me at first glance. It’s all so liberating, but not a definition of who I am.
