Population Is Aging

Time does not seem to be on our side. The population is aging but then I guess that is better than the alternative!

Walter Wagner, Jr. was the guest of honor for his 80th birthday at a dinner hosted by Jody Zimmerman and Glenn Price, held at their lovely home on Village Drive. The house is a 1920’s stunner that has been lovingly restored and is in pristine condition. Dinner was delicious.

Everyone was happy to see Mary Margaret Phelps and Ed Buchart, who is almost always at his home in Florida. Carl and Roberta Fischer would have helped with the celebration but Carl was under the weather.

The evening also served as a going away party for Tom Blencoe who is leaving the public relations business in Louisville for a management position with Godiva Chocolates. He will be spending a good bit of time at the corporate office in Belgium when he is not at his domestic office in Florida. How neat!

Michael Judd was the guest of honor at a 65th birthday dinner given by Lois Louis and David Ratterman, at their treasure house on Napanee Road. It is filled with family collections that are fascinating and interesting. Lois has a large collection of paintings by an artist in New Orleans who loves to paint crocodiles in unique backgrounds! They are funny and most unusual.

H. J. Redmon, Sally Abell, Corky Sachs, Jack Roby, Gene Jaegers and Ben Small were among those happy to help Michael grow old so gracefully.


Big Catch

Susan and Andrew Donovan are out west in the Teutons at Jackson Hole and Yellowstone Lake with their children, Robert, Jackson and Caroline.

They are hiking and fishing. Susan won the family prize for the catch of the largest Big Mouth Bass! Since Susan is the daughter of Peggy Lou and Don Duane, she is an authority on Big Mouths.

The picture of her holding the fish is her only souvenir of the event as it is a catch and release lake.


Gin Gelato

Ghyslain on Market will be offering a toast to the 2012 Olympic host city with gin and tonic flavored gelato. YUMMMM! It features flavors of juniper berry, lemon juice and lemon zest.


New Chef

The Brown Hotel’s GM, Brad Walker, has announced the addition of Richard Mills as chef de cuisine at the Four-Diamond restaurant, the English Grill. He comes to the luxury hotel from Ravello at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, where he served as sous chef.

After a devastating flood in 2010, Mills worked to revitalize Ravello by helping its team reopen the doors and develop a hand-crafted menu of Southern favorites fused with classic Italian techniques. He specialized in butchering, curing artisanal meats and cultivating the wine selection.

Mark your calendars: on Friday, Sept. 14, the Friends of James Beard Benefit Dinner at The Brown Hotel will showcase the culinary talent of 16 nationally celebrated Louisville chefs who are contributing their time and talent to raise funds for the James beard Foundation and Sullivan University’s National Center for Hospitality Foundation. The seven-course dinner will begin with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and the courses will follow at 7.

Tickets are $150 per person for James Beard Foundation members and $175 for non-members. A portion of the ticket price is tax deductible. To make reservations, call 502.583.1234.

The lineup will be hosted by Chef Geroli of the Brown and Chef Castro of Winston’s. Participants are Julian Van Winkle, Mike Cunha, Agostino Gabriele, J. J.
