Now that the spring weather has finally set in, there’s no place I’d rather be than outside.

That includes running, traveling from Point A to Point B and eating at any of the local diners.

I’m always looking for a restaurant with great outdoor seating, but last weekend I may have found my match. Before a night on the town, a friend and I took the drive down Cane Run Road to the famous, family-favorite Mike Linnig’s Restaurant.

The spacious eatery had an enormous patio, where most of its guests sat. There are indoor seating options as well, but I of course chose a spot where I could enjoy the warm weather.

When I first arrived, the house was packed and a sign indicated at least a 30-minute wait. However, to my surprise, after placing my order and a quick game of “Hoop Fever,” my dinner promptly arrived.

My friend and I split a massive portion of the Seafood Plate, which may be more aptly named the Seafood Surprise. A giant heap of a variety of battered fish is piled on top of a plate. My friend also ordered a side of clam chowder, but after all the food the two of us consumed, he barely had room for the scrumptious soup.

I actually found it entertaining to work my way through the Seafood Plate, as my friend and I tried to guess with each bite what type of fish we were eating.

Among the varieties served were four scallops, one fried shrimp, eight fish nuggets, (four spicy and four regular), one pan-fried oyster, one crab cake and one piece of salmon.

The platter also came with two hush puppies and a frog leg pair. While I’m a sucker for seafood, the thought of chewing on an amphibian has never appealed to me. But, with the belief in trying everything once, I hesitantly nibbled on a leg to find it tastes like chicken, just like “they” say.

Following dinner, my friend and I played another couple rounds of basketball before crossing the street to the large tent set up for Music Fest.

In its sixth year, Mike Linnig’s is hosting the event with a range of musical performances from an Elvis impersonator to a Blues Brothers tribute band and plenty of country singers.

Heath Eric & Molly G played during the evening. The husband and wife duo sang a blend of Roots-Rock and Americana. Also at the Music Fest tent was local author Robert Preston Walker, who was selling his latest novels.

With entertainment found at every corner, Mike Linnig’s turned out to be worth the 30-minute drive out to its location. Inside a shady grove next to the Ohio River, it provided a perfect setting for seafood dinner, and the large portion left me filled for the night.

Total price for dinner was $24.90, with the clam chowder ($4.55) and Seafood Plate. ($18.90). With the amount of food even my friend and I couldn’t finish alone, the cost was generously priced.

For a communal environment on a warm spring day, Mike Linnig’s is a great place to kick off the weekend or simply relax. It’s a tradition that’s lasted since 1925, and it’s only getting better with age.
