What would Gustave Bittner think if he walked through the door bearing his name and into the offices of the company he started 160 years ago?
Douglas Riddle, Bittnersâ€™ president and chief operating officer, laughed. Thatâ€™s a really good question!
â€œI think heâ€™d be amazed that itâ€™s all still around today,â€ Riddle said after a pause. â€œAnd I think heâ€™d be proud of whatâ€™s become of it.â€
Casual observers might be surprised at Bittnersâ€™ history. Some Louisvillians are still shocked, for example, to learn that Bittners actually custom-produces most of the furniture it places in clientsâ€™ homes. Many are also surprised to learn that Bittners does a large commercial business, designing and furnishing corporate suites, executive offices and work spaces.
Itâ€™s not so surprising, though, if you study who Gustave Bittner was in 1854, when he opened his doors for business, nor if you familiarize yourself with the innovative people whoâ€™ve succeeded him: his descendants, then the Frazier family, and now Riddle.
Gustave Bittner was an accomplished carpenter and cabinetmaker when he arrived in Louisville in 1852. Though only 25, he had extensive training as a woodworker in his native Pratzen in the German state of Silesia.
Silesia is coal and zinc country, but itâ€™s also well-forested, and woodworking was not an uncommon apprenticeship for a young German boy.
In 1848, much of Central Europe was rife with the violent liberal revolutionary uprisings that consumed Prussia, France, Austria, Italy, Greece and other countries, and so the 19-year-old fled to the U.S. on the Bremen Lineâ€™s large, fully rigged sailing ship, The Copernicus.
In 1852, he stepped onto the docks of New Orleans. But he soon made his way upriver to Louisville, and in 1854 he opened a custom furniture and cabinetmaking shop on South Brook Street (probably near Liberty).
He thrived there for 40 years before passing away in 1895, at 66. His youngest son, William C. Bittner, took over the business, extending it into design consulting.
â€œI believe his customers must have asked him for design advice along with the furniture they were buying, and he saw that could become a natural evolution for the business,â€ Riddle speculated.
â€œAnother area of growth,â€ Riddle said. â€œThere was a demand for upholstered furniture, so why not keep it all in-house?â€
William retired in 1953 at 81, and son-in-law Cletus Schneider became president and owner. In 1957, Schneiderâ€™s signal achievement was hiring shop manager Hubert Schuwey, a young master craftsman born and trained in Switzerland, to set up the countryâ€™s only apprenticeship program in woodcarving, cabinetmaking and marquetry (applying pieces of veneer to form decorative patterns and designs).
â€œThe youngest person in the shop when I arrived was 67,â€ recalled Schuwe, who was 28 at the time.
Schuwey began seeking promising trade school and high school students who were recommended by their shop teachers. He also began hiring women as finishers. â€œThey just had the feeling for it,â€ he recalled.
Soon, the shopâ€™s output was growing.
â€œThat was the beginning of a real showroom for the merchandise we made to be sold off our floor,â€ Riddle said.
That precipitated a move to Bittnersâ€™ current location on East Main Street, where the company could have an expanded showroom, and also a larger custom shop, a refinishing room, more warehouse space, and plenty of office and work space for the growing team of in-house designers.
Cletus Schneider retired in 1968, and his son, William Bittner Schneider, ran the business for the next 14 years. Then 128 years of Bittner family ownership came to an end, and the next era began.
In 1982 Owsley Brown Frazier, his mother Amelia Brown Frazier and his daughter Laura Frazier bought the company.
â€œThey all had a love of beautiful things and quality, and were attracted to fine craftsmanship,â€ Riddle says. â€œAnd they had a vision for the company.â€
They also had a well-established appreciation for Louisville history and historic preservation. In 1989 Bittners began donating a well-known series of restorations to venerated old Louisville homes, starting that year with the restoration – including all design and furniture – of the Tompkins-Buchanan-Rankin Mansion at Spalding University.
Over the next several years, Bittners also donated its services to repair, restore or redesign the Conrad Caldwell House on St. James Court in Old Louisville; the Peterson-Dumesnil house in Crescent Hill; Whitehall House & Gardens on Lexington Road; â€œAmelia Place,â€ the official residence of the University of Louisville president in Cherokee Triangle, and â€œAnnsley House,â€ the adjoining carriage house; and the construction, renovation, design and furnishings of the presidentâ€™s home at Bellarmine University.
The firm also donated its services to redesign theÂ Frazier House, part of the Womanâ€™s Club of Louisville, on South Fourth Street in Old Louisville (which won the 1991 Preservation Award); the Mary Anderson Room at the Kentucky Center for the Arts; and provided the architectural restoration, design and custom handmade furniture for the mayorâ€™s suite at Metro Hall.
Also during that time, Laura Frazier became chairman of the company (in 1993); Riddle was recruited from Jacobsonâ€™s department store in Detroit, where he was vice president and fashion director, to become president and COO (in 2002); and in 2000, Bittners jumped ahead of the curve by getting LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
A lot of those green practices show up in the Bittners wood shop. Despite Bittnersâ€™ reputation as one of the foremost design firms in Louisville â€“ an arbiter of good taste and elegant design â€“ its custom wood shop is still at the heart of the business.
The current manager of the shop is Brian Keenan, who joined the company in 1985 when he was 19, right out of high school. He was one of those hired by Hubert Schuwey, whom he recalled being intimidating, but also very encouraging.
Quality was always first, Keenan recalled of his apprenticeship under Schuwe.
â€œHe never let anything go out the door that wasnâ€™t exact,â€ he said. â€œIf you had to redo it, you stuck to it until it was done right.â€
But doing it right in a timely manner to meet schedules and customersâ€™ expectations was also an important skill.
â€œItâ€™s a business, after all,â€ Keenan said. â€œMy salary was affected by the speed of my work.â€
Keenan said many people came through the shop in his 28 years who didnâ€™t get it.
â€œPeople have to break down the work theyâ€™re doing into steps,â€ he said. â€œIf they canâ€™t visualize the steps, and theyâ€™re skipping around in the process, itâ€™s much harder to go back and correct something thatâ€™s been missed.
â€œYou have to be a detailed person to put out the quality that we require.â€
â€œIf you regard this as just a job, you wonâ€™t succeed here,â€ he said.
Part of that success is the love of seeing that raw lumber being cut and turned into the end product.
â€œItâ€™s a joy to see the beauty of the finished piece when itâ€™s done right,â€ he said.
As shop manager for the past eight years, Keenan now gets to see the entire process, starting with the original idea as it comes into the door, which is very rewarding to him. But, he said, â€œI still love working the wood!â€
He likes to give customers a tour of the shop so they can see everything that goes into the finished custom piece and why it is such a special product.
â€œItâ€™s not a cookie-cutter process of pulling different pieces off the shelf and putting them together,â€ he said.
While the shop has plenty of computer programming, â€œwe still do all our own hand-drawing,â€ he added.
Keenan actually goes out and secures the raw logs that go into all the pieces. Today, many of these are reclaimed pieces secured from old barns, vacant homes that are being torn down, construction sites, or trees fallen after a storm.
â€œI look for an interesting color and pattern of the grain,â€ he said. â€œWe canâ€™t have too much moisture in the wood, and of course structural damage and bug infestation are not acceptable. But knots and burling give it character.â€
He said the shop has reclaimed a number of boards from the Whiskey Row construction site, and also logs pulled from the bottom of lakes â€“ especially larger bodies of water, like the Great Lakes.
â€œItâ€™s so cold at the bottom that the wood hasnâ€™t rotted away,â€ he said.
This wood takes longer to dry, but the structural integrity is good and the color changes â€“ from time, water and algae â€“ are dramatic.
One of Riddleâ€™s signature achievements was expanding the headquarters building in 2012 by incorporating adjacent buildings the company owned and was leasing out. A courtyard and garden were added, designed by landscape architect Jon Carloftis.
And Riddle created Club 1854, a testimonial to Bittnersâ€™ history that also serves as a hospitality area for customers.
When The Frazier History Museum prepared its â€œTop Drawer: 150 Years of Bittnersâ€ exhibition 10 years ago, â€œcurators came here to look through our archives, and we found some original drawings of furniture the company had made for Louisvilleâ€™s first families. We had them restored and framed, and they now hang in our office,â€ Riddle said.
So what would Gustave Bittner think? Heâ€™d see that his name has become an honored brand â€“ though, â€œheâ€™d probably be a little shocked at some of the modern pieces,â€ Riddle said. â€œItâ€™s not just brown furniture anymore.â€
Riddle said the company always burned the Bittners name on the bottom of the furniture so it wouldnâ€™t be seen. More and more, though, especially on some of the pieces that use the irregularity of reclaimed wood, the Bittners name is burned on the top of the piece.
â€œThat began in fashion, with companies like Gucci and Louis Vuitton putting their names or logos on the outside,â€ Riddle said. â€œBut it has to be a strong brand and you have to have the confidence that people want the name to appear, that they see value in it.
â€œWhen Bittners burns the name in its pieces for everyone to see, the clients tell us they love it. I think Gustave Bittner would appreciate that.â€
