Four Physicians Join Baptist Medical

Jun Oh Kim, MD; George Shee, MD; Michael Sutkamp, MD; and James Swift, MD, FACP, internal medicine, have joined Baptist Medical Associates. Their practice is located at 4002 Kresge Way, Suite 124.

Jun Oh Kim. MD, is a 1998 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center and Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., in 2001. He is board certified in internal medicine and is fluent in conversational Korean.
George Shee. MD, is a 1973 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville in 1976.

Michael Sutkamp, MD, is a 1990 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1993. Dr. Sutkamp is board certified in internal medicine.

James Swift, MD, FACP, is a 1980 graduate of the State University of New York College of Medicine in Syracuse. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, Calif., in 1983. Dr. Swift is board certified in internal medicine.

Downtown Welcomes New Retailers

The Louisville Downtown Development Corporation (LDDC) has announced that this spring, downtown Louisville will welcome six new retail businesses to South Fourth Street between the Seelbach and Brown Hotels. The openings support findings made by a retail market study commissioned last year by the LDDC, stating that downtown Louisville can support considerable additional retail, as it currently captures only 52 percent of its retail sales potential. The mix of retail offerings offered by these new businesses aligns with recommendations made by a merchandising plan for South Fourth Street that was commissioned by LDDC and completed in October of 2011.

The new businesses are: Art Eatables, a small-batch bourbon truffle shop; Block Party Handmade Boutique, a collaborative retail, studio and workshop for artists; Celebrations, a custom invitation and gift shop; The Leading Man, a men’s clothing and accessories shop; Les Filles Louisville, an artisan jewelry and accessories shop; and Regalo, a gift, one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories shop. A true public-private partnership, the retail development occurring on South Fourth Street will benefit from entrepreneurs investing in their retail businesses, as well as a $500,000 investment by Louisville Metro Government to improve the sidewalks and lighting on Fourth Street. The streetscape improvement work will begin this month and be finished in time for the new store openings in spring.

Alumni Association President

Ronald R. Van Stockum Jr. of Shelbyville, Ky. is pleased to announce his election as national president of the University of Louisville Alumni Association. Reggie has previously served as President of the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law Alumni Council, and served on the executive committee of the University-wide Alumni Board.

Mattress Firm, Inc. Now Open

Mattress Firm, Inc., one of the nation’s largest specialty mattress retailers, announced on Jan. 4 the opening of a new location in Louisville. The new 5,000 square foot store is located at 13006 Shelbyville Road, Suite 102. Mattress Firm stores feature more than 55 different models of mattresses from top manufacturers such as Sealy, Serta and Simmons. Specialty mattress and bedding products incorporating the latest sleep technology are also on display, including pressure relieving mattresses from Tempur-Pedic. New Offices For Guthrie/Mayes PR

Guthrie/Mayes Public Relations has relocated its Louisville offices to the first floor of the Madrid Building, at 545 S. Third St. After operating from a historic cast-iron façade building on Main Street for 36 years, Guthrie/Mayes’ new office is another historic, celebrated building. The Madrid Building was built in 1929 and was downtown Louisville’s premier ballroom and dance hall through the early 1950s. Renovated in 2008, its lobby and foyer – with marble floors and wood paneling – capture the building’s vintage 1930s era while creating an unmistakable 21st century office environment.

The new Guthrie/Mayes offices were custom-designed and built out according to the firm’s specifications, featuring more open space and informal gathering areas that will enhance collaboration among client-service teams. Floor-to-ceiling windows extend along the office façade facing Third Street, with transom windows providing swaths of natural light into the office center. Women 4 Women Personnel Moves

Women 4 Women has appointed Laura Douglas, a vice president at Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company, as board chair for the nonprofit organization. In addition, Cara (Bernosky) Baribeau, a business entrepreneur with extensive nonprofit experience, has been named interim executive director. Both positions are effective immediately.

Douglas manages LG&E and KU’s Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs department. Prior to joining the company in 2003, she served as general counsel for a water-works district and as secretary of Kentucky’s Public Protection and Regulation Cabinet. Douglas holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Louisville and a juris doctorate from UofL’s Brandeis School of Law. Baribeau is a co-founder and former president of IMC Licensing in Louisville and is a member of the board of directors for the Community Foundation of Louisville. She chairs the nonprofit’s Impact Investing Committee and co-chairs its Grant-making Partnerships and Strategy Committee. Baribeau is also a co-founder of Kentucky’s Make-A-Wish Foundation, which opened in 2001. She holds a B.A. degree in Communication from Chatham College of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Baribeau succeeds Gwen Cooper, who last month stepped down as executive director to become the chief development officer of Seven Counties Services, Inc. Women 4 Women has formed a committee that is conducting a search for a permanent executive director with a goal of filling the position by May. Women 4 Women is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in the Louisville community through grantmaking. The organization strives to empower women and girls through the Women 4 Women Economic Self-Sufficiency Model which focuses on four key areas: education and leadership; social change and single-parent economy; jobs and earnings; and health and safety.

Louisville Orchestra CEO Resigns

Louisville Orchestra Board President, Charles D. Maisch, announced Jan. 12 that Orchestra CEO, Robert Birman will step down from his position effective Feb. 1. Birman met with the Board’s Executive Committee this week and proposed the change citing the organization’s resurgence following its re-organization and the benefit of identifying new leadership to propel the Orchestra’s future, unencumbered by its past.

“I’m proud of the Louisville Orchestra, its legacy, and the musicians who contribute so much to the vitality of our community. As we mark the half-way point of the Orchestra’s 75th season and the start of the New Year, I decided with my family that this is a natural time for us to move forward as the Orchestra’s concerts are flourishing once again, the planning for our new season is complete, and we anticipate the delivery of a multi-year labor agreement by the end of this quarter,” said Birman. “Given our significant progress, this feels like the right time for me to step aside with confidence knowing that the entire focus now can be squarely on the Orchestra’s future.”

Under Birman’s tenure, the Orchestra endured a year-long labor impasse in its effort to balance its costs with historical levels of income. In 2010, the Orchestra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure its persistent debt while it delivered a full season of public subscription concerts. The Orchestra successfully emerged from Bankruptcy in August 2011 and resumed concerts this past September under a 30-week contract with 55 salaried musicians. Birman was appointed COO of the Orchestra in October 2008, and later CEO in 2009.

“Despite our disagreements through the years, we always knew that Rob was acting in what he believed was in the best interest of the Orchestra,” said Kim Tichenor, chair of the Louisville Orchestra Musician Committee. “We wish him well in the future.”

The Orchestra’s concert season runs from September through April each year. The Board announced that it would appoint an Interim CEO until a full-fledged search could be coordinated.
